How to Find a Debt Settlement Company

Finding a good debt settlement company can be a difficult task.  This article should help determine what debt settlement company you should engage once you determine that you need a debt relief settlement.

A debt settlement company or a consumer credit counseling service can really help you if you are having trouble paying your bills.  Getting credit counseling or debt relief can really help you get your financial matters in order.  A debt settlement company or a consumer credit counseling service can help you to renegotiate a better repayment plan with your creditors.  A good credit counseling service can also help you with your personal finances generally.

Please note that this article is not intended to be an exhaustive list of criteria that you must check when selecting a debt relief settlement company.  This is meant as an overview and you should check out a lot of debt settlement companies before entering into a contract with one.

Here are some of the most important facts that you need to acquire when selecting choosing your company for debt relief services.

  • How much will the debt settlement company charge you?  Debt settlement companies will charge you a fee for its services.  Some will make you deposit money with them to ensure that your repayment plan is being satisfied.  These companies charge for these escrow services.  Make sure that you ask for these fees in writing.  You need to know how much the debt relief settlement is going to cost you.
  • Will you be able to get additional credit?  Many consumer credit counseling services will make you commit to not applying for or obtaining additional credit.  This is a good thing.  Remember what got you into this credit mess in the first place.  However, you need to understand the obligations that you are signing up for.
  • What is the financial stability of your debt relief settlement company?  If you are required to escrow repayment money with this company, you need to make sure that they are financially secure.
  • Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau.  This is critical.  You need to make sure that the company has a good track record.  Have other customers filed complaints against them?  How long have they been in business?  How long have they been members of the Better Business Bureau?
  • Will the plan that they negotiate with your creditors be tailored to fit your particular financial needs?  This is crucial.  The debt relief settlement that you need might be completely different than someone else’s.  No two people have the same financial needs.  Make sure that they will create and negotiate a debt relief settlement that works for you.
  • Is the agency certified?
  • Is the credit counselor certified?

Check with your state’s Attorney General or consumer protection agency to make sure that the debt settlement company is on the up and up.
